The Tánaiste made the comments in response to Sinn Féin TD Louise O’Reilly, who urged the Government to have ‘detailed discussions’ about ventilation, as businesses that invested in new systems during the pandemic face the same capacity limits as those that didn’t. The COVID Restrictions Support Scheme will also be extended to the end of January while nightclubs are forced to shut over Christmas. Meanwhile, the Government confirmed it will extend the enhanced rates of the Employer Wage Subsidy Scheme for a further two months to support businesses affected by the latest restrictions. Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has said Government is examining whether pubs, restaurants and cafes with good ventilation systems could return to full trading. Leo Varadkar told the Dáil on Thursday that he has an ‘open mind’ when it comes to imposing fewer COVID rules on hospitality businesses with good ventilation systems.Īnd he said that while NPHET is ‘sceptical’ about HEPA filters, the pandemic will be a ‘long war’ and air filtration might become part of the Government’s response in the future.
